The three aspects of renunciation, bodhicitta, and wisdom are considered essential to the attainment of enlightenment because they lead us to both the temporary and ultimate happiness we desire. Following them, we find everything we need.
The Three Principal Aspects of the Path, Verses 1 & 2
Verses 1 and 2 include the promise to compose the text and the exhortation to listen well. They both contain correlations to the three principal aspects of the path.
Analytical or "checking" meditation involves thinking deeply about the Dharma and applying it to our own lives. It also involves checking the teaching to see if it is logically consistent, if it describes our experience, and if it is more realistic and beneficial than our usual way of thinking.
